I have decided that it must be a great burden to be an Influencer. We saw them in Germany two years ago and we’re seeing them in England this week. They are probably everywhere in Canada too, but I don’t notice them there.
These women (the ones I’ve seen are all women, so far) go to the popular photo locations of the world, all dressed to the nines and with their faces made up and their hair carefully coloured, curled and arranged (one we saw on the Thames River Cruise two days ago also wore a pink Happy Birthday sash and a gold Happy Birthday tiara). When they get to the site-of-the-day with their boyfriends (aka photographers), they have no opportunity to actually see the attraction in question as they are so busy trying to find the right spot in front of it to stand to have their photos taken. And the right posture. And the right facial expression. They miss all the sights completely.
I wonder who it is that follows them on Instagram or TikTok, and actually cares what what the Tower of London would look like if this person were standing in front of it. So far this week I have seen several Influencers miss out on the London Eye, most of the buildings and sights along the Thames, Stonehenge and the Roman Baths. Perhaps they find out what these places look like later, when their work is done, by Googling them. Or looking at the backgrounds of the photos they’ve taken of themselves.
(I actually feel sorry for these people. What a way to live. I took pity on the one on the boat with the Happy Birthday tiara and pointed out that she had it on backwards. I surprised myself by doing that.)
